Contemporary Haven of Layers and Light

This once run-down garden has been transformed into a contemporary, multi-level outdoor space. An enlarged terrace with Italian porcelain paving now provides a generous entertaining area, complemented by retaining walls, Corten steel features and layered planting. A limestone path leads to a secluded upper retreat, while thoughtful lighting and a pergola ensure the garden can be enjoyed as a natural extension of the home throughout the day and into the evening.

Following the initial design meeting with our client, it became evident that the entire existing garden had become run down and in need of rejuvenation. The main terrace area has been considerably enlarged to the point of now being proportionate to the size of the property. Italian porcelain paving spans across the rear of the house, modernising the landscape, instantly providing a commodious entertaining space.

To prevent the garden behind from migrating onto the lower terrace, suitable bricks were sourced to a colour to match that of the property and used to construct a retaining wall. Corten steel has become a common feature throughout the garden, offering variations in heights, presenting optimum opportunities for planting, which in turn aids with the softening of the hardscape areas. To provide ambiance and tranquility, a Corten water table feature has been introduced as a centre piece in front of the brick retaining wall, demonstrating a
focal point for relaxation.

A charming limestone slimsett path links the primary entertaining terrace to the hideaway retreat in the top corner of the garden. The viewpoint on offer at the top of the garden presents an opportunity to appreciate a new perspective and the enjoyment of wildlife, colours and fragrances, that are on offer. The parallel planting adjacent to the terrace provides a secluded feel, particularly with the introduction of the aluminium pergola featuring an optional open/close roof. This now opens up the opportunity for the garden to be utilised in most weather conditions.

With a combination of functional and atmospheric lighting, we have now enhanced the possibilities to maximise the usage of the garden as if it were an extension to the property itself. Subtle up-lights help to illuminate large feature trees whilst wall down-lights wash over the textured finishes of the vertical surfaces. To cover all bases the all important functional light fittings strategically illuminate thoroughfares steps. Last but not least we have chosen sleek light fittings to showcase feature planting, exaggerating the contrasting shadows, bringing the beds to life after dark.
