Timeless Malvern Stone Walling, Shaped by Nature and Tradition

Malvern stone walling embodies a rich local tradition, celebrated for its timeless character and enduring craftsmanship.

This rock originates from circa 700 million years, making it some of the worldโ€™s oldest rock; quarried from the ancient Malvern Hills. The igneous and metamorphic stoneโ€™s warm, rugged textures and natural variations create walls that feel deeply rooted in the landscape. Carefully built by skilled craftsman over many generations, the walling is ontinuously rejuvenated and kept alive. Whether used to define boundaries, support terraces, or frame gardens, Malvern stone walling brings a distinctive sense of character, beautifully blending tradition, durability, and the natural charm of the surrounding area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) and conservation

      Flush pointing

Flush pointing on Malvern stone walling is a clean, traditional finish where the mortar is applied level with the face of the stones, filling the joints neatly without being recessed or protruding. Because Malvern stone is naturally rugged and irregular, flush pointing helps create a tidy, unified appearance while still allowing the stoneโ€™s character to stand out. The mortar is pressed firmly into the joints and smoothed off so it sits evenly with the surrounding stone surfaces, giving the wall a well-maintained, robust look. This technique not only enhances the durability of the wall by sealing gaps against weathering, but also complements the timeless, grounded aesthetic that Malvern stone is known for.

      Snake pointing

Traditional snake-pointing is a technique which lifts the level of Malvern stone walling to new heights. By making the joints between each un-even face of stone more prominent by building out the mortar past the face of the stone itself. Using specialist tools, tram lines are scored in the centre of the joints. Once the mortar has started to cure, the mortar either side of the tram lines is cobbled back flush to the face of the Malvern stone leaving a snake like joint hence the name. Using this traditional method really makes any Malvern stone wall pop. Time consuming but well worth the final result creating a real feature in any location.
