Back Garden Terrace to Multi-Level Oasis

We were contracted to landscape the rear garden of a residential property in Malvern. The original garden was disjointed and inaccessible, with a worn timber summerhouse and makeshift steps.

One of our approved, experienced garden designers developed the new layout, and we wasted no time getting to work on implementing their exciting vision:

The finished garden terrace transformation.

Full Rear Garden Overhaul

The project required extensive earthworks to create a new multi-level garden with integrated seating areas. Avery Landscapes began by gaining digger access by carefully dismantling a section of the stone boundary wall on Priory Road.

With machinery access achieved, the team was able to:

  • Demolish and remove the existing summerhouse.
  • Excavate and create new retaining walls and staircases.
  • Backfill with imported topsoil to form planting beds.
  • Install subsurface drainage and irrigation.

Constructing Stairs, Paths and Seating Areas

The centrepiece of the new garden is a sweeping gravel pathway edged with oak sleepers. This path connects the original lower patio to a new raised seating area via two sets of natural stone steps.

Additional staircases on either side provide access to the highest level of the garden, which is finished with Indian sandstone slabs. Everywhere pathways meet planting beds, the gravel is neatly retained by brick edging cemented into position.

Finishing Touches

Avery Landscapes paid special attention to complementing the original materials and features. The new retaining walls are clad in natural stone slips from Black Mountain Quarries to match the existing lower patio.

The BMQ stone slips walling is very substantial and helped remove the overpowering eyesore of existing block walls originally in place, offering a great alternative to constructing new labour-intensive stone walls. Stone slips are a premium product but lessen the labour involved and can offer a great option to give existing masonry walls a facelift. The dismantled boundary wall was rebuilt in the same style.

Fresh certified, blended loam topsoil from Melcourt were added to the newly formed planting beds to complete the garden. The client was extremely satisfied with the result – a cohesive outdoor space perfect for relaxation and entertaining.
